SYLVIA UPSETS RODRIGUEZ FOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE AT UFC 41: ONSLAUGHT AT BOARDWALK HALL IN ATLANTIC CITY Penn-Uno Fight To Draw For Lightweight Championship;
Mir Submits Tank In First Round In His Return To Octagon

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., February 28, 2003….Tim Sylvia knocked Ricco Rodriguez down with a powerful kick in the first minute and then knocked him out with a powerful right at 3:09 of the first round to capture the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight championship tonight before a sellout crowd of 11,707 roaring fans at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Sylvia (17-0-0) of Davenport, Iowa, remained undefeated in his mixed martial arts career while Rodriguez (10-2-0) of Las Vegas, Nev., suffered his first loss after 10 consecutive victories. “When I hit him, I knew I hit him hard,” Sylvia said as he celebrated in the Octagon. “The Maine-iac,” a native of Ellsworth, Maine, credited his training with Miletch Fighting Systems in Davenport for his success. Rodriguez never could get inside Sylvia’s reach advantage.

In the co-main event, lightweight top contenders BJ Penn and Caol Uno fought to a five-round draw for the vacant UFC lightweight championship. And legendary heavyweight Tank Abbott lost in his return to the Octagon to Frank Mir in 46 seconds of the first round by a toe-hold submission.

Penn (5-1-1) of Hilo, Hawaii, and Uno (13-4-3) of Kanagawa, Japan, both used their striking, kicking and submission talent to counter each other’s offense. Uno suffered a cut over his left eye, but held off Penn and escaped submission attempts to regain advantages in each round.

Tank (8-8-0) of Huntington Beach, Calif., came right after Mir (5-1-0) in typical Tank fashion. He hit him with two powerful rights, but Mir countered with his jiu jitsu skills and applied the toe hold.

“My only loss (to Ian Freeman July 13 in London) was a fluke, bottom line,” Mir said. “My submissions were devastating, but I’m on now. When I’m on, my fights don’t take long. This is what I trained for, a fight, not a judges’ decision.”

“I got cut,” Tank said in response to his injury and loss. “The next time I fight, someone’s leaving on a stretcher. You may think I’m going to the hospital, but I’m not. You’ll see me in the bar later.” In other fights:

The middleweight re-match between Matt Lindland (8-1-0) of Portland, Ore., and Phil Baroni (6-2-0) of Las Vegas, Nev., was even more than the big crowd anticipated. Lindland won a unanimous decision, his second victory over Baroni, after a three-round war. Both fighters withstood heavy barrages of punches, ground and pound attacks and submission attempts. Baroni hit Lindland with everything he could muster and Lindland twice had Baroni in submission holds, an arm bar and a rear naked choke that could have ended it.

Heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko (14-2-0) of Los Angeles, Calif., via Retchisa, Belarus, used his strength and takedowns to defeat Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (7-5-0) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In a lightweight battle that was mostly stand-up, Din Thomas (17-3-0) of Orlando, Fla., won a majority decision over Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt Matt Serra (11-3-0) of Long Island, N.Y. Thomas fought a smart strike and kick battle and stayed away from Serra’s take-down attempts to win two of three rounds.

Heavyweight Gan McGee (12-1-0) of San Luis Obispo, Calif., knocked out Café Dantas (3-2-0) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a barrage of punches at 4:51 of the first round. McGee, “The Giant,” at 6’10”, 265 lbs., dominated from the outset

In the curtain raiser, veteran lightweight Yves Edwards (11-5-1) of Houston, Tex., defeated UFC newcomer Rich Clementi (22-6-0) of Slidell, La., with a quick rear naked choke at 4:06 of the third round. Both fighters were cautious at the start but Edwards took command in the third with solid kicks and strikes before ending it.
