Congrats to the Fighters Last Night

Saturday, July 31st, 2010
Guys,

I just want to congratulate Amber and Jason Pauley on their wins at the Power Beatdown last night at the WV Power Park.  Both scored wins in front of their hometown and are part of the new boxing program at Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA, LLC led by CT King and Butch Hiles.  Look for many more big things to come.

Currently, Mike Sheppard is training for a world title fight, so you will see some great sparring and training at the gym.  Many of our other guys are getting ready for big fights this month too and we thank you for all of the hard work and support.

CT will be leading boxing class today (Saturday) at 12.  We just got in our new digital interval timer too, so look for big workouts!

Hope to see you all there!

New Boxing Schedule Starting Next Week

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010
Guys,

Our new boxing schedule starting next week is:

Monday – Friday 1-9PM and Saturday 12-5PM

CT would like anyone looking to fight to try and be at the gym around 5 days a week, but everyone knows that this isn’t always possible so just do what you can and have fun while doing it!

Everyone is loving the new trainer and workout and I am really pleased with the numbers and how good everyone is getting.  Please spread that word because we truly have a unique opportunity to have such high level training in this area.

I have personally trained boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai champions and as far as the hands go CT has me beat.  So, he is highly recommended.

Also, if you need to schedule a private anytime throughout the day, just let me know and I will arrange it.  It can be anytime in the morning or afternoon.

See you soon!

New Weight Room

Saturday, July 17th, 2010
Guys,

I am slowly finishing up the new weight room at the gym.  It’s going to be fairly large when all is said and done.

We will have all of the free weights and dumbbells you will ever need as well as a pec deck, shoulder press, triceps extension, squat rack, treadmill, and more.

Many people have said they were going to also donate more equipment (Kettle bells, more weights and benches), so it’s going to be very nice.

If you were one of the people who were going to donate equipment, please get with me so we can get everything set up when time permits.  I hope everyone likes the new weight room and that many of you can now drop your memberships at other weight facilities and save additional money.

Train hard and see you soon!

Amazing New Boxing Trainer

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Guys,

Since this came out of nowhere, a lot of people have been asking about the new boxing trainer.  His name is CT King and he is an elite level trainer.  There is absolutely nothing like it in the area and I encourage you to invite people down to try his classes out.  I will start posting video and newspaper articles, as I have time.

Here are the first few clippings I posted:

Huge Boxing News

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Guys,

For awhile now, Leon Ramsey and I have been working on some ideas to take our boxing program to another level.  There are a lot of boxing gyms that pop up here and there, but as you notice, they never last.  There are many different reasons for this and, even with my gym, I have had literally thousands of people come through the doors who wanted to box but never stuck with it.

Those numbers bother me, so I made some changes and took a Monday class that had 3-4 people and within a few weeks it ballooned to 20 plus people.  So, I know we are on the right track.  You need quality instruction that someone who wants to compete can use and someone who wants to learn for fun can use.  That sounds easy, but that combination is hard to figure out and it’s why most gyms fail.

Working on the formula I came up with, and some ideas that Leon Ramsey had, we have now brought a new person into the mix that we hope will bring the Charleston group A LOT of success.  He and I both feel that this will allow us to train amazing fighters but also give your “average person” amazing training for fun and self-defense.  Our new coach has worked with dozens of famous people and has been around some Olympic boxers.  He’s an amazing mitt holder and trainer and we both hope that this will bring great success to the gym, and to Charleston, WV as a whole.

Please stop by at 6PM tonight (Wednesday) and check it out.  You will not be disappointed…

More news to come!

See you soon and let’s thank Leon for all of his help,
Butch Hiles

WV State BJJ & Grappling Now Ranked

Monday, June 21st, 2010

For all Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Grappling competitors, The WV Games is now a “Ranked” event.

http://www.nationallyranked.com/index.cfm?ac=WhatIsRANKED

Mission Statement
The intent of Ranked is to stimulate greater interest in Grappling at all levels, to recognize each of those athletes who achieve success, and to hasten the recognition of our sport as one of the world’s greatest.

What is Grappling?
Wrestling is the world’s oldest, greatest sport. The heart of wrestling, in each of its hundreds of forms, is efficient control of the opponent. Historically, this control has been recognized in one of three distinct forms – pinning, throwing/lifting, and submission. Across continents and through time, matches have variously ended when there is a pin, when one player is down, or when a player submits. The greatest exhibition of control not just in wrestling, but in all of sports, is forcing your opponent to submit. While there is a long tradition in various cultures of jacket wrestling until one player quits, organized matches to submission without a gi or equivalent have only recently gained widespread recognition. This sport is called Grappling.

Benefits of Ranked
While there are now over a hundred grappling events in the US each year, many thousands of grapplers, and several premiere events, there is no nationally recognized ratings system. Until now.

There is no credible sport in the USA without a national and regional ratings system. A ratings system is not just a helpful addition, it HAS to happen. The benefits are countless, but include:
A ranking system brings credibility with the media, potential sponsors, arena managers, and virtually everyone else that is not already inside the sport.
Athletes will compete more often, to earn more ratings points.
Winners will get their due recognition.
A national database of grapplers will end ‘sandbagging’ and bring fairness to the sport in a number of other ways.
A national pool of athletes can pool resources for lower prices on products, insurance, and a host of other resources.
Tournament coordinators nationwide will be more able to associate and share successful steps they have taken.

How does it work?
When competitors enter an event, he or she characteristically fills out a form with name, age, sex, experience, and contact information. The event coordinator will register each new competitor into the online Ranked Grappler Database.

The event coordinator then enters the winners, using either pre set divisions, or completely customisable categories. Athletes who have competed before are already entered.

Contact information about the competitor can be edited by that player. In addition, players can check that they have been accurately credited for wins.

Points are tabulated for each place, and the score is weighted by the number of entrants at that event. A larger event is worth more ranking points.

The resulting scores can be displayed by the various combinations of age, sex, skill level, state, region, and nationally. There will be separate rankings for grappling (no gi) and BJJ (gi) rules.

Rankings are available online 24/7/365. In addition, Grappling magazine runs a monthly RANKED article with top fighters and a year end issue with all the top national fighters.

Event Info

Remember, this event is on September 4th and more information can be found at www.theWVgames.com or by contacting Butch Hiles 304-549-9370 or advancedbkj@gmail.com

Training For MMA Fitness

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I get questions all the time about nutrition and diet, and literally everyone you talk to is going to tell you something slightly different.  Currently, I am a big backer and fan of the “paleo” way of eating and I strongly suggest that to everyone.

However, I know some people that go to the gym may not want to follow that plan, so I am going to attach and plan specifically designed for MMA athletes.

Check out this great recipe book for MMA athlete’s (PDF): http://www.trainingformmafitness.com/support-files/ultimate-quick-start-recipe-guide.pdf

I hope you enjoy,
