Former UFC champion, and MMA legend, Jens Pulver will be doing a MMA seminar at Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA, LLC on June 11th from 11-2. Jens was a UFC champion and a force in the Pride Fighting organization. He has an excellent MMA game and can offer a lot of additional wrestling and stand-up skills on top of everything else.
In addition to the MMA seminar, we will officially be screening his new documentary called “Driven” at the Capitol Theater on 123 Summers St at 3:30 PM. There will be a question and answer session with Jens and the director afterwards as well. This is a huge event and a very special documentary.
Jens Pulver – Driven
While at first look the film may appear to be just another fight documentary, Jens Pulver ups the ante by presenting a very raw and emotional look into his past, opening up in a way few do to give voice to the victims of child abuse and domestic violence, and hope that the cycle can indeed be broken.
We want to be able to bring this film, and Jens’ message to our community, so we’re embarking on a much bigger and special event than normal. We really hope that you will bring your friends and family with you to enjoy this film and hear his message.
Buffalo Wild Wings in Southridge will be hosting and official after party where we will watch the Carwin vs Junior dos Santos UFC with Jens and the whole crew. They will also cater our VIP section during the screening of “Driven.”

I just want to thank everyone who came down on Easter weekend and supported their friends and teammates. I also want to thank all those who anxiously await the results on twitter and facebook when they cannot be there.
We have unbelievable team and a great gym for friends and family to be in. I am always very appreciative and thankful for that. Each one of us puts out heart and soul into working out to better ourselves for our friends and family. Some of you compete and some of you do not but you are all equally as important to each one of us.
Last Saturday, Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA, LLC traveled to Jenkins, KY and had four guys fight MMA against some very tough opponents and each one of our guys represented themselves and the gym very well.
Cody Tominack was up first and had a war with a guy who was very similar to him in both fighting strategy and skill. However, Cody dominated the first round with a monstrous takedown and some ground and pound.
In round two, his opponent reversed a position on Cody and was able to get into full mount. Cody stayed composed and weathered the storm and was able to reverse that position and land a couple big strikes with just seconds remaining.
With the rounds tied one to one, Cody’s opponent could not answer the bell for the third, thus giving Cody the win via verbal submission.
Eran Bailes was next up and didn’t waste much time once the bell started. Eran added another monstrous takedown and worked his way into side control. From there, he worked his way into mount and finished the match with strikes in about a minute and a half.
Mike Lovejoy was the third of Hiles’ fighters to compete and he had a very tough opponent on his hands. However, following a similar game plan as the others, he also shot in for a takedown. Once he achieved the takedown he was able to catch the guy trying to get back to his feet with a hard suplex followed by taking his back with full hooks. His opponent fought hard but eventually the rear choke was set in and the match ended about 2:30 into round one.
Finally, Wes Hanson came to the ring to fight for the Gladiator Fighting 145lb championship. Wes is trained by the legendary Leon Ramsey, as well as the Butch Hiles gym and put a tremendous amount of preparation into this fight. It showed from the beginning as he landed a nice front kick and scared his opponent with his power.
Feeling a sense of urgency, his opponent shot for the takedown. However, Wes quickly reversed it, and gained side control. From their he softened his opponent up with strikes, while he worked his way into full mount. The full mount proved to much for his opponent because Wes quickly trapped his opponents arm around his head and rained down uncontested punches until the referee was forced to stop the fight.
Wes Hanson won his fight in about 1:30 and became the new 145lb champion. This was only his second MMA fight, and it came against a much more experienced opponent. However, once again, hard work pays off and Wes overcame a lot of obstacles to capture this title.
Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA, LLC once again goes undefeated and helps build another champion in WV
A few local companies have gotten together to offer a reward reaching up to $10,000.00 for information leading to the capture of the individuals to robbed the home of Butch Hiles while he, and his family, were away on vacation. His green 1994 dodge truck was also stolen (since found).
If you or anyone else may have information tat might lead to the capture of these individuals, please call your local police or send an email to advancedbkj@yahoo.com
Information can be kept annonymous and thanks for your time!
Obviously we had one heck of a weekend! If you haven’t heard, we legalized MMA in WV and we went 5-0 in MMA all in the same night. I can officially say no other MMA team can every say they did that (special thanks lower in article)
I want to thank CT and Brian for their great corner work this weekend. Leon Ramsey and Jeremy Bates had some problems getting their license but I want to thank them for making the trip and not killing anyone for the mess. They worked hard getting Wes and Adam ready. Honestly, there are too many people to thank, so thank you all… seriously (wife too, so don’t get mad).
As far as MMA goes. Thank for working hard for us. Every time we needed calls, emails, or bodies you guys were there to do it. Thanks for everything and you should all be proud because each and everyone of you made this happen. Sam Minardi did amazing work with the MMA bill and should be commended over and over. There were many people who worked hard behind the scenes. Thanks to you all (including my friends from Morgantown – Don, etc). Leon Ramsey took off work and drove several hours to make the public hearing and he has also worked tirelessly for the last 10 years. Again, almost too may people to properly thank, so thank you all.
Please check out all of the pics and video on facebook and youtube regarding our MMA fights in KY…
Also, please help me promote our BJJ tournament March 26 at Hoover. I really hope you guys can compete. It’s been a long time coming! http://www.advancedbkj.com/double-elimination-tournament-march-26-2011
And don’t forget we have Marcello Monteiro coming April 11 (unless I don’t think I have time to promote it) for just 65$.
I will be in Puerto Rico this Thursday until next, so I will need all the help I can get…
Thanks for everything. I couldn’t be prouder of my team or friends!

On March 4-5, 2011 Butch Hiles BJJ & MMA once again competed in several different cities and two different states all in one weekend. They finished off the weekend going 4-0 in professional boxing, won three first place trophies at the Arnold Grappling contest, two seconds, two 3rd place finishes, and had a 3rd place finish in state wrestling tournament!
Congradulations to everyone who competed and won. This was many competitors first time on the grappling mat. We want to give a special congratulations to those from our affiliates – Waterford, Logan, and Weirton who went out and competed and medaled this weekend!
Congrats to our very own, Cayden Dexter, for winning the conference championship in wrestling. He has been working his butt off with his team and dad, Bill Dexter.
Monday, February 21, 40 amatuer and professional boxers from across the state gathered to spar and train. This is something that we hope to make a regular occurance, so if you are interested in joining on the sessions please let us know.
You guys are all helping me tremendously and last nights workout was just another example of that (having folks like you to roll with is a gift - other gyms I've been to really don't compare). I appreciate the patience to teach me, too, since I know I'm very behind curriculum wise. Definitely getting lots out of the workouts!
