Coleman, Miocic to Sign for Fans at Caged Fury 18 in Charleston
7/5/12 (Charleston, WV): The NAAFS, in conjunction with Reality Caged Combat, will return to the state of West Virginia this August 25th with arguably one of its best cards of 2012. In addition to what is expected to be a stellar fight card, the NAAFS has confirmed that MMA superstars Mark Coleman and Stipe Miocic will both be on hand to sign autographs and take photos with fans in attendance. Coleman is one of the sports most accomplished fighters historically. The UFC Hall of Famer is also a former Pride Grand Prix tournament winner and the former UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Miocic, who is the former NAAFS heavyweight Champion, is one of the UFC’s brightest young stars and will be part of the main event on September 29th in England when he collides with Stefan Struve for at UFC on Fuel 5. After capturing the NAAFS heavyweight title in June of 2011, Miocic has gone on to win three straight fights in the Octagon including his most recent, a TKO over then unbeaten Shane Del Rosario at the historic UFC 146 event. Miocic is currently undefeated at 9-0 as a pro and has finished 8 of 9 opponents.
Caged Fury 18 will feature many of regions top fighters in action on August 25th including UFC veteran and West Virginia’s own Branden Hinkle. The card will also include Wes Lane, Ryan Shank, Victer Crenshaw and Matt Garretson along with the return of former MW contender John Soeder. The complete fight card is expected to be released in the coming days. Tickets for the great event start at just $25 and go on sale soon. Tickets for Caged Fury 18 can be purchased at the Charleston Civic Center box office, www.NAAFS.tv,www.realitycagecombat.com, Ticketmaster and by calling 304-549-9370 or 330-280-8442. All bouts are subject to change.
About the NAAFS
Established in 2005, The NAAFS is the fastest growing regional mixed martial arts organization in the sport today and has produced over one hundred live events in the Midwest. The television program “NAAFS Cage Fighting†can be seen each week domestically on the television home of the Cleveland Indians, “Sports Time Ohio†and nationally via Direct TV and Dish Network sports packages. The NAAFS has been featured internationally on G-TV. Highlights from NAAFS events have aired on prominent networks such as Spike TV and HD Net. Fighters that have competed inside the NAAFS cage include Brian Rogers, Jessica Eye, Chris Lozano, Daniel Straus, Dan Spohn, Aisling Daly, Stipe Miocic, Jason Dent, Donny Walker, Forrest Petz, Matt Brown, Ben Rothwell, Dave Herman, Ryan Madigan, Paul Bradley, Sean Salmon, Jeff Cox, Josh Hendricks, Sean McCorkle and Phil Davis among many others. The NAAFS is responsible for organizing and hosting MMA’s most prestigious amateur tournament which has developed dozens of today’s top professional fighters.
The UFC’s Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy recently had a mini documentary filmed and Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA, LLC is featured in the film (check out part 2).
“I get paid to beat people up,” says Dan Hardy. “I love every minute of it.” It’s a good thing, then, that Hardy is an MMA fighter, and was cool with hanging out with us.
Still, he’s not a typical fighter. He gets along with them, sure, and relates to them, but he also takes competition as an insult: Anyone who signs up to fight Hardy must “think he’s better than me.” And unlike most fighters—shit, unlike most athletes—he’s a pretty cool guy—engaging and a real human being. A real freak, sure, who hurts other people real, real bad, but a normal dude.
Hardy lives somewhere between isolation and aimlessness. When he’s training for a fight he practically lives at the gym, and even when he doesn’t have a fight on the horizon, he’s still training as much as possible. He tells filmmaker and Blood for Blood bassist Ian McFarland what he thinks constant competition is doing to him. He’s an angry dude who wants to slow down and “chill out” eventually, but right now he gets off on the violence, on the discipline, on the superiority of beating another man down. Only fighters, he says, know what it’s like to prepare for a fight, and then withstand one. Everyone else has expectations, but no one else understands.
But is there anything for Hardy outside the world of fighting? He can’t relate to politicians or regular people… even other fighters. Actually, the only place outside the gym Hardy seems to feel comfortable is in the hardcore scene, where people have tattoos like his and generally don’t give a shit who he is. He walks out to Cock Sparrer’s “England Belongs to Me” at fights, which is appropriate since he’s from Nottingham. His MMA nickname, The Outlaw, brings to mind Outlaw Anthems, Blood for Blood’s 2002 LP. The fact that the hardcore scene—where fuckups and angry little kids hang out—is the only place a person like Hardy feels normal seems appropriate.
The film was created as part of the McFarland & Pecci brand series of mini-docs focused on iconic subculture heroes. Go to www.mcfarlandandpecci.com to see the other films.
At his gym in Charleston, Butch Hiles is offering classes to the general public. In those classes, people can learn how to protect themselves.
Hiles says more than 10,000 women are raped in Kanawha County every year. To combat that, he says they just need to know a little self-defense.
Women in the Kanawha Valley took control. They don’t want to face an attacker and be unprepared.
A college student, Krista Moore said, “I think it would good to learn how to protect myself if anything were to happen.”
And her friend agrees. They say being aware is key.
“If anything does happen like that, you could save yourself from a very scaring situation,” said Lindsay Tincher.
All of the proceeds from this event go straight to REACH. That stands for Rape Education, Advocacy, Counseling, and Healing.
The group is there for women who need a helping hand through what, they call, a very complicated and difficult time.
“We don’t like to say that these programs help prevent, but they do help reduce the risk. And so, just learning how to come out and reduce the risk of a sexual assault or any other attack is definitely important,” said Jaqueline Bevan, of REACH.
